Prof. Dr. J.B. Giyana Banawiratma Enters Retirement: A Model of Devotion and Love for Humanity

After twenty years of service in the field of theological education, Prof. Dr. J.B. Giyana Banawiratma, affectionately known as Pak Bana, has officially entered his retirement. His retirement officially began on August 31, 2025, coinciding with his 79th birthday. His long journey stands as a testament to the dedication of an academic who not only loves knowledge but also embodies the values of humanity and a liberating faith.

Pak Bana has served as a lecturer in Research Methodology, Contextual Theology, Christology, and Ecclesiology. In both the classroom and academic service, he has always brought forth thoughts that are sharp yet deeply moving. He has continually encouraged students and colleagues alike not to stop at theory, but to courageously reflect on how theology can become a transformative force for justice, peace, and love in the realities of life.

As a token of gratitude and appreciation for his many years of service, during the Faculty Worship of the Faculty of Theology on September 23, 2025, the faculty—represented by Rev. Dr. Wahyu Nugroho, M.A., Vice Dean II—presented Pak Bana with a symbolic gift: a ring. The ring represents an unbroken bond between Pak Bana and the faculty community—a symbol of love, dedication, and enduring fellowship.

Although he has officially retired, the Faculty of Theology at Duta Wacana Christian University (UKDW) continues to warmly welcome Pak Bana’s presence within the academic community. His presence remains a source of inspiration, through his thoughts, passion, and the exemplary life he has lived.

Retirement is not the end of service, but a new chapter in the journey of a true educator. We express our deepest gratitude for the dedication, wisdom, and love he has sown throughout his years of service. The intellectual and spiritual legacy of Pak Bana will continue to inspire future generations of theologians and servants of humanity.

Keep writing, keep creating, and keep striving for the wong cilik (the ordinary people). — Rev. Prof. Robert Setio, Ph.D.
